System Broken after update

Did my usual up2date thing and rebooted. System stops with message:

exec of init (/sbin/init) failed!!! : 2
umount /initrd/dev failed: 2
Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!

Don't know where to start. Really need step by step as I am not a hacker.

Get a bootable cd (Fedora install cd, cd-based distro etc) and boot it. Then look into /var/log/messages file on your disk (you may need to mount the partition - if you don't know how to do it, ask). At the end of the file there's your last boot. Browse the messages, see what fails first. That's the main reason. When you have first messages you may already know what happened and how to fix it. If not - post them.

The ones in your posts are OK (well, if error messages may be OK...), but I think that there was something earlier.

Booted with install CD. Started linux rescue. Tried to mount sda2 to look at /var/log/messages. Kept getting error:
Mounting /dev/sda2 on /f00 failed. Device or resource busy.
Can mount sda1 which is boot partition but that doesn't help me.

My System:
MSI KD7 Master MB
2x AMD Athlon 2200 CPUs
2GB RAM
3x Fujitsu MAP3367NP SCSI HDs @ 34.1GB ea
Adaptec 2120S SCSI Controller
RAID 0 102.53GB

Updated kernel (and various default suggested things) from Fedora Core 3
2.6.10-1.770_FC3smp to 2.6.11-1.14_FC3smp when problem began.

This very reason is why I got rid of FC. I understand that it's difficult to provide updates that can account for everyone's systems, but I cringed everytime I did an update. I'm on Slackware now, and I'm not looking back. It takes some getting used to, but it's a learning experience as well.

Does any of this help identify the problem? It is lines I pulled out of /var/log/messages.

Is there something earlier? For me it looks like not mounted one of the partition or mounted as not executable. I'm wondering if you still have the old kernel somewhere?

I finally gave up, FTP'd my files to a server and reinstalled Fedora from scratch. Probably the easiest way but would have liked to have saved the install instead. Thanks for answers and effort.
