system's power options will not "apply"

I completely reinstalled SuSE 9 after a debacle I made out of configuring an /etc config file and now I cannot get the system to power down using the power options under Control Center. These options worked before. What do I check? thanks.

Not familiar with Suse at all, but there should be an rc.something file (in /etc) corresponding to your runtime levels that calls a shutdown using either acpi or apm. My kernel has acpi compiled in and I don't use apm, but the configurations were already done so I didn't have to do anything. Not sure if this is helping...!

I am using a Tyan Tiger Motherboard and they tell me that their system won't "automatically" power off under LInux!

I just reinstalled the whole system. I had some other bugs to deal with and thought that would be the easiest way. Power down is now working properly.
