klogd fails after installing 686 kernel, kern.log is empty

hi,

I recently upgraded (apt-get) my kernel to 686 using ubuntu's repositories. everything works fine but this:

on boot time, ubuntu says:
"Initializing Kernel Log ................... Failed"

ubuntu forum people informed me that this corresponds to sysklogd.

[EDIT]

after removing the usplash screen on boot, I found that in fact klogd fails. and the kern.log is empty.

I manually started klogd by doing

sudo klogd -d

it did not give any errors and started to write to kern.log. but it fails during boot time.

I would really appreciate any ideas.

thanks.
