Syntax for backups

I have attempted to do backups with a program called file backup, but in order to automate full backups I cannot use the interface, but I have to edit a file associated with the program and the cron file which seems to create errors.

Since I've been having so many problems with this program I would like to just use dump along with cron, but I am not very proficient with the shell or vi.

Does anyone have the sytax and instructions on doing a full automated backup from the gui.

thanks

Not really providing an answer but:
- what program did you use, link?
- what did you put into cron? Maybe it's fixable ..
- what errors do you get?
- what distro are you using? Gnome/Kde?

/edit: A howto + script and info on using cron : Daily Backups: Quick and Dirty Part 1 of 2
