how do I sync my ipad with linux?

If you mean with iTunes, you don't, since iTunes doesn't run on Linux, and likely never will. You don't say what version/distro of Linux, or what you mean by 'sync' (just need music? Contacts/calendar too?), but there are options...and they're not necessarily pleasant.

Bear in mind that if Apple changes ANYTHING, it could render all you're doing inoperable. And if you jailbreak your iPad, you could brick it, too. I have kinda-sorta handled these issues for our iPhones/iPad:

• Get a free iCloud account. Once enabled, ALL of your contacts/calendars will automatically get pushed to the cloud, and sync without having to do anything. You can even sync your iCloud account with your Google account too.
• Have Android tablet/phone? Smoothsync (it's $2 in the Google store), reads/writes from the iCloud, and keeps it synced across your devices.
• Music can be handled with Google music. Runs on Linux, background task...can upload up to 20,000 songs free. Get Melodies or Go Music for iPad, which syncs up/downloads music from Google to your iPad, over the network.
• You can copy videos using the Google drive app. The InSync application for Linux runs great, and gives you Google drive access/sync in the background.

If you use those things, you've got things 'synced', essentially, without iTunes; (music, contacts, calendar), and can just plug the device in to copy photos to/from the device. Yes, there are a few steps, but if you've already got a Google account, you've got access to Google music and drive already. Setting up Google music on Linux is trivial, and InSync is easy as well. After that, the rest is done as background tasks (copying files, music to Google), and pulling them down is a couple of button presses on the iPad. And...no jailbreaking/iTunes needed.
