synaptics add program thing doesnt work on ubuntu

every time i go into the add programs thing and click the box to get the program, it tells me the list is current and i have to refresh it
i hit refresh and put in my password it downloads something
then it says updating list and takes me back to the list

this happens over and over no matter how many times i do it

i have a working internet connection (i am on this site now with ubuntu)

First, it's not the "Synaptics add program thing"--it is the Synaptic Package Manager. It does much more than just add programs.

Please post the exact details of what you are doing. For example, if you click on a package you have multiple options, including install, remove, upgrade, etc. Once you select an option, then you would click "apply".

There's no "refresh"--only the "reload" button. This you use only if you have changed the repositories.

It seems that you have no repository on your /etc/apt/sources.list
Open synaptic and go to configuration/repositories
Check every downloadable from internet check box (main, universe, multiverse and restricted; you don't need source)
Close that window and hit refresh again.
Try again what you where doing.

thanx for your help
fbianconi - your idea worked, thanx, and now i know how to use the synaptic package manager (made sure that was right just for pixellany)

thanx again

Gosh, don't do it for me....;)
Seriously, I'm glad you got it working. I wish that package managers were promoted more--they are part of the real strength of Linux.
