synaptic upgrade-now start up is stuck-root@tty1[~]#

I'm new to linux and a beginner with any computing. I fired up a bare bones setup with MEPIS 3.3 and lovinin for three months now until I decided to update buy using synaptic. now after booting it stops during startup, prompts for mepis1 login, I try root, then it prompts Password I enter my password, then there is some legal jumbo and in red there is root@tty1[~]# prompt.
I don't no what i'm being asked for ? I'd love to get back on track!

Try typing 'startx'. It's either booting into the wrong runlevel or there is a problem with X preventing it from starting. Try that and we'll see what works.
