Question Synaptic keeps asking to reload package info - cannot add repositories (debian lenny)

I've not had a problem up until now. I put the testing version of debian on my machine about 3 weeks ago, and haven't used it much since then - however, synaptic was working perfectly.

Today, I just went to add repositories in order to install avidemux, but clicking the add repositories menu just brought up a message saying I needed to reload the package information. I did that, but then going to the add repositories menu still brought up the same message.
It doesn't matter how many times I do it, it still asks me to reload it.

I've tried apt-get update, and that didn't help. There are no broken packages, and the distro that I use was installed from an ISO stored on the HD. apt.conf and fstab have the relevant entries to make the ISO automount in order to get packages from that instead of the physical CDROM, and that works fine (I had to use that method when building the nvidia drivers for the system).

I just find it very confusing that it's suddenly broken now, when I haven't used the system for a while. Any help on fixing it would be appreciated. Let me know what logs/output I will need to make a note of in order to fix it, please.

Hi Rexx

Here is my /etc/apt/sources.list:

Code:
# deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 4.0 r1 _Etch_ - Official i386 CD Binary-1 20070819-11:52]/ etch contrib main

deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 4.0 r1 _Etch_ - Official i386 CD Binary-1 20070819-11:52]/ etch contrib main

deb http://ftp.uk.debian.org/debian/ etch main
deb-src http://ftp.uk.debian.org/debian/ etch main

deb http://security.debian.org/ etch/updates main contrib
deb-src http://security.debian.org/ etch/updates main contrib
deb http://ftp.uk.debian.org/debian/ lenny main
deb-src http://ftp.uk.debian.org/debian/ lenny main
# deb http://ftp.uk.debian.org/debian/ sid main
# deb-src http://ftp.uk.debian.org/debian/ sid main
# deb http://synce.sourceforge.net/debian/ unstable/i386/
# deb-src http://synce.sourceforge.net/debian/ unstable/source/
deb http://security.debian.org/ lenny/updates main contrib
deb-src http://security.debian.org/ lenny/updates main contrib
# deb-src http://mentors.debian.net/debian unstable main
# deb http://jonnylamb.com/debian ./
# deb-src http://jonnylamb.com/debian ./
# deb http://opensync.gforge.punktart.de/repo/opensync-0.21/ etch main
# deb-src http://opensync.gforge.punktart.de/repo/opensync-0.21/ etch main
deb http://download.skype.com/linux/repos/debian/ stable non-free
It started out as etch, but as you can see, I have added lenny, and have, at times, used other repositories including sid. When finished, I have commented them out, as you can get conflicts with eg stable as opposed to subversion packages. Every time you change this file, run "apt-get update".

I am no expert so would probably not be able to provide guidance on your version of this file, but I have resolved this sort of issue by commenting out unnecessary repositories here. Perhaps you should try working on this file directly.

Please be careful when you work as root. I always keep a copy of the last version of this file by

Code:
# cp sources.list bksources.list
in case I mess it up.

Hope that helps!
