ls -l shows
foo -> fooforreal
which indicates a symlink.
-- Oh, and 'file foo' will id symlinks or whatever else it may be, too.
-- And oh again - 'man ls' will explain all of 'ls's options. Man is one stop shopping for a lot of things.
