Switching to google mail want internal server to send now points to external

Found the Answer so thanks to me and a friend of mine. Also thanks to the 1 person who actually answered

Here was my original question:

Currently I have 2 linux servers. We use Red Hat and Fedora with sendmail and qmail. In the send mail configuration file send.mc we point to the external web server defined in SMART_HOST. The external web server has VPOPmail. We are going to gmail. I want to be able to do away with the linux mail server and just have the local linux serer. Questions:

do I have to have a Pop3 server like the VPOPMAIL just to direct the mail to the gmail acct?

How do I do it - just change the send mail SMART_HOST to google? Also how do I put the authentication for USER and PW. I would love to first set up a test send.mc environment so I could test with my own e-mail and some automation of reports. When I am sure it is working I can make the changes to the send.mc I started to create a send2.mc but am not sure if i am on the right track. HELP and thanks

For anyone else that has this problem.

1. All you have to do is change the sendmail.mc file to point to the google - or whatever server you are going to use. Change the SMART_HOST to reflect the DNS of where you want to send.
2. You also have to put the user name and password - I believe in the authentication file. I will add to this as I complete that.
3/ As for the Outlook or any other client you use make sure to change the outgoing server to be the provider dns. In googles case the port is also different - you have to make sure the port is open on the router. You do not have to worry about VPOP because you do not need any client or popserver. outlook would be the client and google or the provider has the pop3 on their end. Hope this helps another newbie.

Hi,

perhaps you find my story about exim4/gmail useful. Unfortunately my experience with sendmail is very limited.
