Switching Distros
 

Hello!
I am currently using Fedora 14... I am looking to switch to Ubuntu. Feeling a little out of it, working too much in none linux accessible environments (well there is but I don't think military maps count seeing as they use an old version of Red Hat)
I was wondering if anyone out there has any advice about making the switch. Willing to reset my whole computer seeing as I have all ready backed up all important documents of short stories I have written... Any and all suggestions welcomed!

Depends on what you want. If you are looking for easy install and mostly pre configured -->


1) Linux Mint : Stable with codecs and a suite of software installed for use by most users.

Interested in more of an adventure and more control over your system -->

2)Debian Squeeze is a great stable desktop with a large repository. Requires some more understanding of how linux works and you will be involved in the system set up from library and plug in install to additional software. But in the end it will be reflective more of how you want.


Interested in getting your hands dirty and dictating a large amount of the set up -->


3) Arch is my favorite since it is a very base install and requires the user to be knowledgeable of linux set up but gives you full control of options. The arch wiki is very extensive so there is allot of support if you need it.


I would also check out Distro Watch to "shop around" before you make a switch. :cool:

Be forewarned that if you go for Ubuntu 11.x+ you'll get the new Unity interface, whereas if you stay with Fedora and upgrade to F15+ you'll be looking at GNOME Shell. I don't like either and typically run an LXDE desktop. By the time I have things configured the way I want them, there's virtually no difference between my Ubuntu installations and my Fedora installations. If you've already got all your important files backed up, just wipe replace the Fedora installation with Ubuntu and restore your important files.

Ubuntu should come with an easy enough installer, so if you installed Fedora you should have no problems with Ubuntu.
That said, the new desktops (Gnome shell, Unity) have been ill received by many, so you may want to get Kubuntu or Xubuntu instead for a different interface if you dislike Unity.

Thanks for the suggestions. Currently I am out in the field for practice before I deploy overseas. But Will be back mid November to try out one of these suggestions. Again thank you and I'll let you fine users what helped! And any others are welcomed!
