Switch to text mode?

I'm trying to install Redhat 9 on an old Pentium Pro 200 pc. Video card is AT3D (one of those low low end graphic accelerator cards).

Anaconda refused to complete the install, jammed at the hardware probe.

Installed successfully in text mode, but never given the option on whether I like my login to be text or graphical mode. It is in graphical mode when I read the bootup sequence (init5).

After bootup, my VDU is blank with no video signal from pc. I pressed Ctrl+Alt+F1, I think it's receiving video signal (LED not blinking) but still a blank screen.

Note: It's a dual boot with win98se. VDU is Samtron 55V

What can I do next?

Can I change video to 'VESA'?

Thanks in advance.

Go to /etc/inittab and change the default level from 5 to 3. You can either reboot at that point or just do: 'init 3' at the prompt.

It's a totally BLACK screen. :-)

... with no tinge of white - no cursor, no prompt, etc. even after pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1.

Use the first cd to boot into rescue mode, then change to runlevel 3... Your in init5, right? atleast in init3, you'll have full access to make whatever changes you need to.... Once at a visible prompt, I would run 'xf86config' and pick some safe values... Like maybe 16 bit 800x600 with the vesa driver... Keep bumping it up some until you find the problem.... push comes to shove, you can work straight from the rescue prompt for a bit..... Look at /var/log/XFree86.0.log to see if that might reveal any clues....

I've managed to change inittab to init 3 after using rescue cd.

I ran the XFree86 -configure.

Looking at XF86Config.new and the earlier XF86Config generate during install, I noticed some differences:

XF86Config.new
--------------------
ModelName "Monitor Model" in Section "Monitor"
Device identified BoardName as "ProMotion AT3D" in Section "Device"
Section "Screen"
no mention of default depth.
SubSection "Display"
Depth 1
EndSubSection
SubSection "Display"
Depth 4
EndSubSection
SubSection "Display"
Depth 8
EndSubSection
SubSection "Display"
Depth 15
EndSubSection
SubSection "Display"
Depth 16
EndSubSection
SubSection "Display"
Depth 24
EndSubSection
EndSection

XF86Config
--------------
ModelName "DDCPROBED" in Section "Monitor"
Device identified BoardName as "AT3D" in Section "Device"
Section "Screen"
DefaultDepth 16
Subsection "Display"
Depth 16
Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"

Is this info helpful enough?
Should I manually follow the "Monitor" details as probed by the initial install?

btw, both configs gave me the same results - blank screen, and I've not gone through the firstboot in X yet.
