suze 9.0 64-bit installation crashes

Im a complete newbie and dont understand the first thing about linux, so im a bit confused as to why my suse installation doesnt work. I boot it from the cd and run the installation and it all seems fine until it runs the hardware scan(even before the yast wizard starts). Then i get a message saying it's reading the floppy drive and nothing happens after that.
i've tried booting it with and without a disk in the drive and even unplugged the drive from the motherboard i always get the same message.
Ive used livecd versions of knoppix and suse before, so i know my system is compatible. Is there some kind of boot disk i need?

Any ideas would be appreciated, thx
Guy

Do you have the 64-bit edition of SuSE? other than that maybe unplug the floppy drive AND disable it in the CMOS BIOS and try it...also SuSE installs very slow at some points without letting you know its doing anything...so it may be a case of just wait a while

When I was installing SuSE it stoped just before the main insalation, I tryed using the second disk and when it told me to insert the first disk i did and it worked fine from their on

yeah, i have the 64 bit version. I did try disabling the floppy controller, in fact i disabled most things at some point ;)
I guess it might just be the installation running slow, ill try letting it run a while.
thanks for the advice :)

just how long are you waiting for? and what are the specs of your machine?

the_real_guy 04-19-2004 05:32 PM

well ive tried waiting for more than 5 minutes before i got bored sometimes.
My specs are:
Amd64 3200+, 1GB corsair ram, msi K8t neo mobo, geforce fx 5900
dunno if any of the other stuff's useful but here we go:
maxtor diamondmax 160GB hdd, sony dvd rom, lg cd-rw etc.

Sounds like it shouldn't be too shabby to me :-P could be the 64 bit SuSE is still a bit buggy. But when I installed (32-bit) SuSE 9.0 on my 1 GHz 384 MB RAM computer there were times i had to wait about 25 minutes or so without any sign of anything happening. but i'm on SuSE now so i'd just let it go for a while (an hour or so) and then start to wonder more

hehe, yeah, should be sweet once its running:D
ive never tried waiting that long, ill have another go at the installation i guess.
cheers.
