SusSE12.2 no console login

I did a fresh install today of openSuSE12.2 KDE 4.8.4 "release 2". Downloaded Nvidia driver but need to install at runlevel 3. Tried selecting Console Login at login screen and tried to switch using Ctrl+Alt+F2. All that did was just a millisecond flash of the screen with prompt for login. Then dthe screen turned blank. I tried many times typing blindly my username, hit Enter, Password, hit Enter. That didn't work. I then tried typing username password with only a space in between. Nothing worked. Just can't get rid of the black screen staring back at me.

I am afraid to go to Yast to set run level 3 and then cannot log in due to the blank screen. That means I will not be able to get anywhere to re-set runlevel to 5.

Can someone help me please? I would like to get my screen resolution right first before I go into multimedia codecs. Updates after automatic configuration have all been done. NVidia driver downloaded by need to install on init3.

I have sourced help from the sites below but without the ability to get Console login going, I am stuck.

Thanks very much in advance.

please READ the suse wiki for the nvidia driver !
the kmod IS RECOMMENDED !!!!
http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:NVIDIA

the Open nouveau driver IS already installed

http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:NVIDIA_drivers

and IF you INSIST on using the nvidia304 .run
BE ADVISED - there is a BUG in all the 300 .run drivers
they are NOT reading the default GAMA screen setting
if you set the gama to anything other than the default it WILL NOT keep it on the next boot

see "the hard way "
http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:NVIDIA_the_hard_way
but you might need to install the 295 if the 304 is not working well for you
BUT
unless you have been using the .run for years and YEARS
the "Zypper" install IS BETTER !!!!

If you use the .run then YOU ALSO have to manually REBUILD the boot image to UNINSTALL nouveau driver
if you did not blacklist the nouveau driver before installing the .run you ? might? have problems
( the .run should???? and a black list but suse is an ODD operating system )

"Ctrl+Alt+F2"
you can not install the .run that way
X11 MUST be off and in run level 3 ( level 1 will NOT work well )

press and hold the power button for 5 sec.
the box will HARD power off

reboot
on the green and yellow boot screen there is a text box near the bottom

type in a 3
and hit enter

OMG!! So that's was why I had to adjust the gamma at every boot. I used the one-click install instead of run. On suse12.2, I could not get the resolution to that of a 24" monitor. Can only work with a nomodeset boot option. After many problems, I just reverted back to 11.4 that had a nvidia driver before. It worked fine, but after this installation, the same gamma problem occurred. Driver was configured at init3 without problems on 11.4 this time. A bummer about the bug. Hope it will get fixed in one of the updates??

Thanks for letting me know. Altho its a pain re nvidia bug, I went back to 11.4 because I wouldn't have to reconfigure a lot of stuff when I upgrade back to 12.2.
