SuSe9.1 Installation

I'm new to Linux and getting ready to install SUSE 9.1 and I'm looking for some recommendations.

Here's the background, my current harddrive, which has WinXP installed on it, has developed a failure in which it can no longer read CDs or DVDs.

Ideally, I like to install Linux on the new harddrive and setup dual-boot system on the original drive. Given the original harddrive's failure, can a dual-boot system be setup, or should I install the bootloader onto a floppy disk?

Thanks,

The question reads a little funny to me. You have the current hard drive, but your installing linux to the new hard drive. So you are going to have 2 hard drives?

It should work fine installing the bootloader to the MBR. I also don't see the relation to the failed CD/DVD reads. XP can't read the cdrom or is the cdrom itself dead?

Confusing question.. If your CD drive isn't reading anything, my guess is you won't be able to install anything until that's fixed.
