Suse7.1

Hi everyone.

thank you for taking your time to help out a newbie.
Don't get me wrong, is Suse7 graphical.
Well when I get to the part when i have to set up my display etc, it won't test my video card (FX 5200) and only gives me the option for resolution of 640 X 860, and won't give me the option to select 3d. Sorry if I sound so stupid but this is my first expierence with Linux.

thanks
Cider

SuSE 7.1 is graphical and does run KDE etc. out of the box. However, the problem with older distros (and there have been 6 releases of SuSE since 7.1 I think) is that the device support isn't that great.

It could be that the video card didn't exist (or was very new) when 7.1 was released, or just that no one had written a decent driver for it. In the same way, for example, USB Flash Pens won't work with Windows NT or 95.

I would recommend you get a newer version of Linux : SuSE 9 is the latest version; or one of many other distros. If you want to check your graphics card, you could get a copy of Knoppix which has excellent device support and doesn't require you to install anything (you just run it off the CD).
