Suse user account stopped working

Hi all,

I'm new to Linux and apparently not so lucky with it

I just managed to retrieve my data from an old installation I hade on Mandriva 2006, which I had a major problem with and almost lost all my data.

Now that I have finished installing Suse 10.1 with Gnome interface on my system, for some reason I am not able to login any more! The machine is booting fine, and I am able to login as root. But, when I try to login with my normal user ID, the login screen disappears for a short while and then it shows again requesting user ID....

I have been doing many changes on the system (installing TT fonts, codecs for Totem, importing emails....)

I hope this is not of a major problem and it can be fixed fast. Your help is highly appreciated

I also had problems when I last tried SuSE. I thought I'd done everything right etc etc, but found that all the stuff in my /home was inaccessible. something to do with the numerical ID thing. All the original /home stuff was only available to root.

If you still have the stuff you saved from before somewhere, then you could just try using root to check what users you have on the system, if there is one, then delete that account, and re-create it. Then try to copy the stuff you saved back into the newly created user account.

regards

John
