I downloaded the iso image of SUSE personal a while ago. At the time I was under the impression that SUSE professional costed money and all you could get for free was SUSE personal.

After reading some posts it seems that you can get SUSE professional via the online installer.

I want professional for the extra packages like a compiler, web server etc.

Is this correct?

Also since I have already downloaded the personal iso can I just get all the packages that come extra with professional via YAST?

And another question; is there a way to copy the online install onto bootable CD's in case you want to reformat for some reason, Such that you could use it as a normal installation CD (like the personal iso I downloaded).

PS: another question. professional supports 64 bit processor, is there a way to make personal support 64 bit?

I have used mainly online install lately, so I am not sure about differences. The Professional version seems to have some additional applications that are not 'Open Source License' compatible (like nVidia driver and MS TTF fonts) and source packages.

All source packages will be available to you after you add SuSE ftp installation source to your YaST configuration (Available package list will be updated). Not compatible licensed software will be available through online update - you will have to accept licenses.

Online install is something like 7GB , so you will need a DVD, but it can be done.

It seems that AMD64 packages are available through network installation. So you will probably just need a network installation CD.

The Personal edition only comes with KDE and a few Gnome libaries to run some things, but if you want Gnome you should do the ftp install of 9.1 Pro.

Just download the boot ISO, configure your NIC, add the ftp info, select your packages, and let it roll.

It says somewhere close to or on the same page where you read about the FTP Install of Pro that you can just dld the entire installer folder and install that way. I chose that route instead of FTP install over the net since I wanted to be able to install onto a lot of computers. you need the boot.iso, and the 7.2 Gig 9.1 folder and everything in it. So I suggest you find an FTP client you really like and start dlding. Unless you just want one box installed, then go the FTP route. But be reeeeeal sure you have it configured just how you want it to stay configured, because reinstalling over FTP will take just as long as the first time. (That's why I chose to install from dlded folder, because when installing and especially when installing a new OS you maybe aren't completely familiar with, you often need to reinstall it a couple times to get it how you want it.)

Actually you don't need to reinstall a coupe of times... that's the beauty of linux.. it's easily fixable... sure.. You *CAN* install again and again but why?? I ave installed SuSE 9.1 Pro via FTP about 5 times in the past month (all diff. boxes)

It's not hard... and I wouldn't recommend adding the SuSE 9.1 pro sites tot he 9.1 personal lists... just re-install with the 9.1 pro disc... the server i use, which is quite fast... (complete install in about 1 hour over cable) is the Chicago server... again, download the boot.iso image and start your install process... then when it asks you for the IP of the server, use:

140.221.9.138

and it will ask you for the directory:

/pub/suse/i386/9.1

and tada... you get YaST and all your package selections... Easy as pie.. you don't need to DL the whole directory... only if you have dialup at home or something... and then you can go to a friends house and DL the directory to install at your house... If you have high-speed.. leave it on the FTP...

How new are you to linux, if I might ask? It seems to me that you know at least enough to get by, since your profile says you're using Fedora. I personally had a lot of problems with it and that's why I came to SuSE. My apartment is all of 5 miles away from Novell, BTW. Anyway- one of my friends works there and found out I was having probs with FC2 and got me into SuSE and I'm hooked. sorry to digress- anyway what is your setup like? DSL/Cable/T1@ work/ T3@ school... and will you be installing on just one box or what? I'm curious, if you don't mind me asking, because as Halo14 pointed out, if you've got a real connection to the net, then ftp install shouldn't be a big deal.

I have had a fair bit of experience with linux and have a tripple boot system. Fedora / SUSE / windows. I really like SUSE and think I want to change from Fedora to SUSE.

However I want to be able to install SUSE on a number of computers, even some friends that don't know how to use linux because SUSE is so user friendly.

That is why I want to have a complete OS with compilers etc. And that is why I want to be able to have professional on CD.

Then you need to run out and buy the Professional edition.. man it's less than $100... Support Open Source!!! ;)

Get with a linuxgroup and you can find even the commercial distros via ftp....... and then make the cds. From there, you can simply copy the cds for em. Or if you but the CD's, just make dem copys and there ya go, man.
