I understand you're a newbie - remember that Google is your friend. The OpenPrinting Database (openprinting.org) has information on using CUPS (the default Linux print subsystem, which I assume you're using) with many printers. Their entry
for the HL-5170DN gives some starting points for the printer. If you're not sure about any of the terms, look them up - it'll pay off in the long run. I'd also recommend reading some of the documentation on the CUPS site and elsewhere to figure out more about how Linux printing works.
On a side-note, while I've used SuSE for quite a while, 10.0 is absolutely ancient - as in no-longer supported - now. I would advise you hold off on doing anything with the printer, backup any data you have, and upgrade to the current 11.0.
