SuSe: noarch, src, nosrc?
 

i was wondering, if i wanted to do a hard drive install of suse linux 8.2 (downloaded from crc.ca, one of their official mirrors) would i be able to install without the src, nosrc and/or the noarch folder under suse/noarch, suse/nosrc and/or suse/src ?

I think it's depends on your installation requirement:
suse/noarch contains some stuff that you may need like documents (help) that independent from any microprocessor architechture,
suse/nosrc contains some packages that doesnt come with source code like 'commercial' or 'secret' ones and
suse/src mostly the source codes that you may ignore if you dont want to.

I never do harddrive install because it more difficult and tedious than FTP install.

i had a friend get me the suse cdrom's. 7 or 8 disks.
i started the install and got most of what i wanted.
it only needed disk 1. i was really suprised.

Thanks for the input guys, i got all of the rpms except the ones in src (2.60Gb is not that much fun for downloading, i am downloading them from school's (T1) computer and transfer it to my usb2 drive (an 80Giger in there ;)) and after loading the usb modules i think i can mount it as a vfat partition, so i guess i can install it from there. :) (i have 56k at home so i guess ftp installing would take ...er... 9237645^83 days? :D

I'm trying it once i got my drive home tonite :) i'll keep u all posted :)

i do the same thing. i carry a cdrw drive up to my
girlfriend's office. i'd leave it hooked up, but i would
have to worry about computer services taking it.

hm, but how do i split the files into cdroms? (i am trying the get the latest distro not 7.2 tho -_-)

you would have to know which files go on which cdrom,
for the install program to work right, and you would have
to make the first cdrom bootable with their boot image.
it would be really tough i think for a less experience user
to do. i think you can get lists of the files on the particular
cdroms from suse. if you're desperate to do so, i could
ls -lR them for you and email, but not till tonite.

thanks a lot for the effort whansard :) i already got my little suse box running and i am a happy man :D i must admit that i liked the kde interface in suse more than redhat/mandrake myself :)

oh yeah, and for the hard disk installation, make sure u copy *ALL* of the contents in the ftp into your local drive (including all the /boot stuff, even if u boot with an installation CDROM) - the noarch folder is needed, as well as nosrc. src can be omitted since it only contains the source code of all the precompiled rpms within the i586 folder.

oh and i made this post within my little virtual VMware SuSE8.2 box too :)
