Suse 9 and NT Proxy server and NVIDIA drivers
 

Hi all,
I am totally new to linux, Ive just installed my third distro ever (Previously I had redhat, but Ive had a look at lycoris and suse 9 , and suse 9 is the one that won me over) and I would like to ask a couple of things.

I have my linux test box at work, where we are using an NT box (MS proxy server) to get out to the internet.
Do any of you know of a "complete idiots guide" to making suse work via this proxy server? First of all NTLM authentication is on, and there is no opportunity to change it, so I need to find some way to authenticate with it.
From what Ive found while searching on the net, some combination or stand-a-lone of Samba and/or Squid is needed. (If I understand isnt Samba mainly for file and printer sharing though?).
Squid seems to be the way I need to go and if I also understood properly, I need to set it up to use our current proxy as parent, but Im not sure how to do this. Ive looked at the squid.conf file and at the moment Im a bit lost. Incidently during the setup, I made sure to install both Samba and squid, so they are both on my system.

If any of you can give me an idiots guide, or point one out to me, along the lines of, "go there", "type this", "next do this", I'd really appreciate it.

Secondly with the installation of the nvidia drivers Im a little confused, I went to NVidias site, pulled down the the drivers (I32 something), dropped into text mode, ran sh nvidia-long-filename-whatever.run and it fell over at the "kernel stage" informing me that it needed files compiled specifically for my kernel. When I went to the nvidia site they had files, but only for suse 8.2. Is there any way I can get these files to work on Suse 9????

Sorry if the answers to these questions are obvious, but as I said after years in a windows environment linux is something totally new. I am computer literate btw so you dont need to explain to me what a mouse is etc :)

no, no, no:

You got the ingredients, but the recipe is completely messed up:

Samba is only for exchanging files between both machines "via-windows"
Squid is a proxy server, so it should run on the NT running as proxy:
(Right now I'm writing this to you on a linux laptop Mozilla browser with the IP address of my windows box (running Squid for NT) set as proxy server within Mozilla config.

So:

The Internet <-------> NT Box (runs squid NT service) <-------> linux laptop


The problem for this set up is that you must configure each client (Mozilla, ...) to use the NT proxy server, which only proxies http, https and ftp.

So you cannot run any P2P client on the linux iron if Squid is the only proxy software running on the NT box. For that to be accomplished, you'll need something like wingate or winproxy or whatever, which are not free as Squid.

As a resume:

the proxy software must be installed on the machine which has the internet connection, and not on the "internal" one.

Hey - thanks for the answer. Problem is the proxy is a locked box, I cannot install anything onto the proxy itself, I simply need some way to make the NTLM accept the linux box.

I was using "NTLM authorization proxy server" before (http://www.geocities.com/rozmanov/ntlm/index.html), problem is that this got me through to the internet, but fell over after a couple of minutes browsing.

So if you know of something similar and more reliable that I can install on the linux box and NOT the proxy server, Id appreciate it.
