Suse 9.3 Pro installation package ?

Hi

I can`t find a Suse 9.3 Pro instaltion package only LIVE cd that i only can use it if i have the dvd in my DVD+RW Drive any of you who no where i can download the real Suse 9.3 Pro instaltion package 9.2 pro ?

SuSE don't make their installable DVD version available for download. As you've seen, the only full ISOs they offer for download are live DVD versions.

If you want to install SuSE for free, you will have to do an online installation. I've done this myself, and it was a very simple process... albeit very time consuming.

The process starts with a download of a small CD image, which gives you the normal SuSE installation startup, but then instead of installing from the disc, it then loads everything from the SuSE server.

It works well - as I say, I did it myself for v9.0 - but it does take a long time, and of course, if you ever need to install again, you've got to download the whole thing again from scratch.

As far as I know, they're the only Linux distribution aimed at desktop users that does things this way.

Alternatively, they do make their older versions available, so you can download a full 9.2 DVD if you want it.

The mini-installation cd will allow you to install the full version of something.
You start with just a small iso and you use ftp to install all of the rest of the packages ?

It should be on this page.

But.... um.... I can't see it there. The 9.2 version is there, but not 9.3.

It's possible they haven't made it available yet. They tend to delay releasing the ftp version for a month or two after the main release... it's been a couple of months now, so I was sure it would have been available by now. But I guess not. Must be soon coming now, though.

both my windows are win32 the only one i can find is the one i download some weeks ago but it is i live version on 1.37GB but i have to have it in my DVD+RW drive all the time if i want to use Suse 9.3 Pro so please be more specefic about what link i have to use when i do a Online Installation ?

The one I'm talking about is shown on the page as the "ftp version". There's two links at the bottom of the page (one each for 32 or 64 bit computers). Download the one that suits, burn it to a disc, boot with it, follow the instructions, and wait......... ... .. . . ..

But as I say, it's only listed as 9.2 at the moment. Not sure when the 9.3 ftp version will be available. Keep an eye on that page.

Hey the open source nature of Suse makes www.thepiratebay.com the perfect place for your open source needs..

Suse has been open about letting you make copies for friends as long as NO MONEY changes hands you can send copies of your Suse dvds to the moon and they don't mind...

With that in mind..
There is a Suse9.3 DVD iso torrent on www.thepiratebay.com and it is available to anyone who wants it..

I have used the DVD ISO for my home network and it works great!

The catch? oh yeah I should include that..

you need a Dual Layer DVD burner to burn the 8gig image to a DVD (media for it is $20 US for 3 8 Gig disks.)

:( But still not bad if you are cash strapped.

We should all spread the "Lizzard Love" Around if you ask me.. SUSE is the best Linux D-stro there is in my book. Polished, most hardware just works. (all 8 computers in my house I have pieced together over the years have all worked out of the box. weird combos too.. BCM mobos.. and old Dell.. nvidia and ati video cards... all work.. 3d doesn't work out of the box but a little updateing and rpming took care of both nvidia and ati 3d support.)
I have all their boxed sets from 6.2 to 9.2.

(I'm even going to purchase 9.3 box this weekend, because I like having the original CD/DVD for everything. Plus if I ever need install support it's there when you buy, course I've never needed it LOL.. I'm talking myself out of buying it heheh but I will anyway.)

I'm also trying to install using their mini install iso.

You can now get 9.3 at:ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/9.3/iso/.

You get the Network install for x86-64 and the mini install for normal ones.

No! The only downloadable and installable versions are the torrent files. From what I have heard, 9.3 FTP will be released in the middle of June. The iso's from your link are not usable without another source of 9.3 packages, which is currently only available on CD.

so... if we get this straight

I have an iso of the 9.3 DVD (I got from www.thepriatebay.com) loop mounted and shared over a Samba connection on my network.

In theory...

The mini iso should work to start my system. (assuming drivers are available for my network/wifi card.)
Then I can point it to any source I want no? :p

Havn't done it yet.. heheh but I'm working on playing with it. (gotta figure out how to get atheros drivers to work on the mini iso first.)

Seems reasonable... If not over Samba maybe over ftp?? either way it should work in theory.

I made an iso of my 9.2 DVD and loop mounted it to my server in the house and shared it with the rest of my network...
Works GREAT! for installing new apps without the DVD... from anywhere on my network...

VERY Clever of Suse to give you options on where the install media is at... With that as the premise in mind, I thought maybe the same could be done with a system update or even install.

Again seems reasonable... but reason and me don't always agree..

I have tried by downloading the installation tree and install it locally.

It seems that the whole ftp tree on Novell free ftp server lacks only the directory /boot. Anyone here can make a copy of that and distribute it?

I have successfully upgraded from 9.2 to 9.3

You should be able to upgrade easily!!!

But the almight BACKUP should be done if you have anything important on your system..!! If something goes wrong don't you blame me.. this worked for me.

I'm typing to you from my new 9.3 install...

Earlier I posted that I downloaded an 8Gig dvd iso from a bittorrent tracker sight.

Ok here is what I did with it..

1) As root, I loop mounted it to a server on my network.
1a. I created a directory to mount to

mkdir /mnt/Suse9.3

1b. I like to have it available all the time so I added this line to my /etc/fstab (I used azureus to download it. and I think you need to have a blank line at the end of the file so don't forget that.)

/home/My_User_Name/.Azureus/downloads/suse93pro.dvd.iso /mnt/Suse9.3 iso9660 ro,loop,auto 0 0

1c. Then I mounted all available file systems in fstab

mount -a

1d. Verify you have files in /mnt/Suse9.3

Code:

ls /mnt/Suse9.3

If it's not empty you're prolly ok. (I did it earlier last week with a bad download. and while it looked like it mounted fine the /mnt/Suse9.3 directory was empty. I should have files in it.)

2) As root, I offered this mount over the network with SMB (Keep in mind my Samba Server is already working correctly, so if samba isn't running on your network already this won't work unless you get samba up.)
2a. I edited /etc/samba/smb.conf and added this to the bottom (again not forgetting the new line at the bottom of the file. Note: For those that don't know.. your samba user name can be different from a normal *nix user_name.)

        path = /mnt/Suse9.3/

        writeable = no

        valid users = My_Samba_User_Name

2b. restarted the smb/nmb deamon

rcsmb restart && rcnmb restart

2c. Verified the share was available on a different computer. (Just browse to it from any smb:// protocol compliant browser. Konquer does it by Default I think. Certainly xp will if you have one of those on your network.)

3) Now I went to the laptop I was upgrading, & again as root.
3a. I mounted the smb share from my server to a local directory. I did this in /etc/samba/smbfstab

//Server_IP_or_nmb_Name/Suse9.3  /mnt/Suse9.3    smbfs    username=My_Samba_User_Name,password=My_Samba_Users_Password

3b. start the smbfs service. (You need samba clients installed for this check yast if you don't have it. Should be installed by default but who knows how people set their systems up.. incidently I don't have this start automagically on boot. Only when I need it. SMB is a noisy protocol so I choose not to automount it.)

rcsmbfs start

3c. Check to make sure you have data in /mnt/Suse9.3 (again this should NOT be empty at this point.)

ls /mnt/Suse9.3

4) I went to yast and changed my installation sources.
4a. KDE Menu->System->Yast (I'm a KDE person. If you use another WM I'm sure you can find yast. If not open a termal and type yast. BUT you know that, and I know you know that. ;P )
4b. Enter your root password correctly when prompted, and goto Software->Change Source of Installation.
4c. Disable any other media sources you have. (Click on the source the name of which should be something like "Suse Linux Version 9.2" and then click the "Enable or Disable" button. The status should read "off")
4d. Click Add->Local Directory then type /mnt/Suse9.3 into the dialog box. Click OK. Click Finish.
4e. Back at the Main Yast window Click Software->System Update.
5e. Satisfy any dependacy problems. (I saw something like 651 packages need updateing package selection needs your attention. I needed to actually downgrade firefox to get the install to work without any grief.)

6) Wait patiently while your packages are updated. Close yast. Reboot and enjoy.

It works as advertised.
OH BTW I didn't need the mini iso at all! But I did download it.. and even tried to install from it.. but no atheros drivers were available (MadWifi/ath_pci whatever you want to call it.. but I didn't try that hard because I hade a better idea. Which I just shared with you and it works perfectly!!).

Sorry for the long winded ness of this message but I hope somebody finds it usefull!

OH man...

I did something silly (I can only guess the rpm database on my system is goofy.)

Don't use those instructions... They are fun in theory .. but i easily messed up my whole system.
oops.. so much for the clever hack I thought I conjured up hehehe

At anyrate I did an update and updated something like 60 packages.. via YOU and poof...
machine is broke... NOT broke as in I don't have x or as in I can't login.. I mean broke as in boot to grub and view peacefull blanks screens... no error messages or anything.

Just a black screen..
So my experiementing has come to an abrupt halt LOL...

really abrupt.. everything looked beautifull (had 3d going and everything..) but the reboot ... well that killed it..
So I'm gonna have to go through some kind of repair on this system.. though I'm thinking I may just hose it and install 9.3 from the box set, I'm picking up this weekend..

I think your problem was caused by not using the mini-installation-iso. When you are running an upgrade, it is always recommended to start with the kernel. And this kernel has to be in memory right from the start. The only way to do this, is to boot from a 9.3 installation CD. If you then figure out how to loop-mount the 9.3 bittorrent iso as installation source, you are the man!
