SuSe 9.2 x86_64 SLOW to DEAD ???
 

I have Suse 9.2 on my R3000z Compaq Presario Laptop, with AMD 64 3200+, NVIDIA..

What i want to know is this, has someone the same (SUse 9.2 on AMD 64) and it is just SLOW!!!

When it is booting, i have to wait an eternity.. WHY ?! ?!... even when de OS is up, on X server, using GNOME, is not THAT SLOW, but still being slow IN COMPATISON WITH the power i have available (3200+ 64 bits) (7200 rpm hard disk) (512 ram)

So, can someone give some helpful information, i think im leaving SuSe 0.2 in the next days, i hate the speed it is going under.. so i want to now the expirience you have had guys...

once your in gnome, go to a konsole and run the top command see whats usuing up your resources. Type the free command and sees whats up with your memory how much is used etc...

also what size did you create your swap?

No offense to the SuSE crowd (i'm not trying to start a flame war or anything) but SuSe was always kind of sluggish on my machine. granted i coud tweak it to be faster, I just switched distros..
not saying that's the key, but it worked for me.. I use Arch and it's fast... but it's not for everyone..

SuSE is slow, but great, wonderful tools like YaST, sometimes when we come from something we know (cough XP), the boot time of Linux can seem really really long, and it can seem to run slower than Windows.... stick with it.

My SuSe 9.2 Pro install on x86_64 was also REALLY slow. When using KDE's info center it always showed that I was using up a lot of my swap space even though I have plenty of RAM (1GB) for my needs. After some research I found out that there was a memory leak in the 2.6.8 (or whichever kernel 9.2 ships with) kernel that caused x86_64 architectures to swap a lot. I'd recommend updating your kernel (maybe to 2.6.11) and seeing if it helps.

is that memory leak for ALL 2.6.8 kernels? or just SuSE's 2.9.8 kernel?

mabye thats why mandrake ran so slow too.
