If you can muster up enough patience to let it boot completely, check the various message files in /var/log. You might find something.

Lightbulb you shoudl really...

consider doing a custom install next time you install linux..

at least a custom partition install

here's my KDisk Free Info:

/opt 2.1GB total
/home 18.6 GB total
/ 2.1 GB total
/var 500 MB total
/swap 1.4 GB total
/boot 250 MB total.

Now, when I have to re-install Suse, I don't lose everything in /home!

yippee!

I would seriously consider pressing F2 when your laptop boots up.

I do have some questions for you:

How new is the BIOS on your Sony?

Have you optimized your BIOS on your Sony for performance?

I don't use Opera. I use Mozilla. Others like FireFox. Again, not totally sure that Opera caused the whole shebang to do that first. I would almost say maybe it is fscking the drive during every boot for some reason? As the other poster said, maybe you should be patient, and then check out the logs in /var

HTH.
