SuSE 9.1 Pro, Pros & Cons

Hi Guys, I am building a new system with the AMD Athlon 64 and ASUS K8V SE deluxe mobo. It has been recommended to me to use SUSE 9.1 (I HATE WINDOWS!).
This will be my first Linux Distro, not stupid, can learn anything with a little guidance.
You guys are the experts, doe's SUSE 9.1 seem like a great place to be or would you recommend something else? I don't want to go from distro to distro like some of you do, although I could. I just want my butt kicked in the right direction so I don't have to relearn everything over and over.
Thanks, Lola

I looked at the suse site and suse pro 9.1 looks pretty good. What would you be using it for? You may not need pro.

Distro

If you don't have experience using linux I suggest you try a live distro like SUsE 9.1 Live cd or Knoppix. And if you want to install a distro on your hard drive I suggest you give Mandrake or SUsE a try they are both good.

eloyj88, where do I get these live distros for Knoppix 3.3 and SUSE 9.1 (I take it you mean working from a disk)? My current system is old and maxed out (CD broke)! I haven't built the new system yet, still getting the parts. I want to have "something in hand (OS) when I boot up the new system", it is NOT going to be windows.
All assistance/suggestions are welcome! Now do you see my delima? If I buy a distro and can't stand it, there go's the money.
What is your opinion of Knoppix vs SUSE9.1, or have you tried them?
Thanks, Lola

New system is Asus K8V SE Deluxe, AMD 64 3200+, 512MB ram.

Distros

You can find many distro in this page http://www.linuxiso.org/

distros

All distros are good but it depends on what you are planning on using them for. I will suggest you try knoppix.

eloyj88, why Knoppix and not SUSE? Does Knoppix have 64 bit capability like SUSE 9.1 ?
I appreciate your help.

I would say that the Slackware is the cleanest distro, though this depends on what you're going to be using your computer for.. Slackware is also rated the one that is hard to use, but let me tell you; Slackware was my first distro -and the only one. If you wanna start learning fast, i suggest you start with this;)

dave_starsky 05-31-2004 12:51 PM

I used to use Slackware, but now I use SuSE, it's a lot easier to get up and running how you (well i) want it

Distros

I recommend Knoppix rather than the SUsE 9.1 Live CD because it brings more programs in its CD. I don't know if it has 64 bit capabilities.
But again it all depends on what you are using your computer for. :)

I'm a SuSE 9.1 user and have used both Mandrake (8.1 and 8.2) before switching to SuSE (8.2 then 9.1). I currently use SuSE 9.1 on 2 computers (1 laptop one desktop). I have used Knoppix on laptops before.

Slack is an excellent distro, but tends to be a bit more technical than other distros to set up. It's probably not a first choice for a first distro. Mandrake is good as a first distro. So is SuSE.

SuSE has excellent 64 bit support. If you have a DVD drive, you can get a 64-bit installation working right off the bat. Installation is relatively easy (just make sure your BIOS is set to boot from the DVD drive before the hard drive). There are a couple of bugs with sound, but they are universal to all current distros (a problem with KDEs sound support and the 2.6.4 kernel). I'd recommend having a friend who is familiar with Linux standing by in case you have a problem.

Just post here if you have any other problems, I know I'll help whenever I can, and as you can already see, people fall over themselves to help other Linux users.

I have SuSE 9.1 on my AMD_64 (Kdv d) and I am pretty happy with it. sure there are some issues but it works very well.

I would reccomend it. I have used SuSE 8.2, 9.0 and have seen no reason to change distro.

I never got the live suse cd working on any computer.

Is there someplace to get a discount on SUSE 9.1 PRO? Is it necessary to have the books for this distro? Can it be installed with out any problems from the Ebay copies?
Lola

JaseP 06-02-2004 03:11 PM

Order the upgrade version of 9.1 Pro. It ships without the books and costs around $60.00.

Lola Kews 06-03-2004 01:12 PM

JaseP, How important is it to have the books? If I order the upgrade version and find later I need the books, can I just order them?
