Question SuSE 9.1 Personal

Hello..I have downloaded and installed several versions of Linux with some various degrees of success. I really liked FC2..FC3 only used a default screen size of 640x480. Linare did not see my sound card. Gentoo??? Red Hat 9 and Mandrake 10, I couldn't figure out how to use the update engine. SuSE 9.1 is what I am trying now. I installed it off the disc I just burned, It installed quickly and it updated itself ok. Restarts then I get a Green screen with a Gecko on it. but never get a desktop. I only get a prompt to sign into. Just a sort of command /shell login. It says have fun! you have mail.
is there something else i need to do here.

startx should do it, though you should not need to. Did you change the install type when installing?

Assuming you get KDE from startx, then click on the lizard in the corner (for your start menu). Go to "Control Center"->"System Administration"->"Login Manager"->"Administrator Mode"->"Convience" and select your login.

If that doesn't give you an auto login on reboot, then go to YaST->System->"Runlevel Editor", and make sure that xdm is enabled.

If you don't get in with startx, then something is really not setup right. Chances are X isn't even installed then. Post back if you have more trouble.

Log into the terminal and edit /etc/initab, changing the default runlevel to 5 I think instead of 3

Sorry since I posted I reinstalled XP (I cant figure the dual-boot thing out) so my kids could use it since their's crashed. I will try these methods as soon as I get their computer back up. Thank you for you're suggestions. I really do like Linux it works real smooth and runs well. I use this computer to run a Battlefield 1942 Server and it works great for this application. Also I feel it is a little more secure than windows.

Well I fixed the kids computer (power supply) and reloaded SuSE again. I let it set up the partitions and it worked. This time i got a desktop and it even dual-booted with XP. This was an interesting Distro. But I think I like FC2 better for now. It might be because i found a very helpfull site on howto for fc2. http://fedoraguide.org/fc2/fc2beginnersguide.html
I just hope I can reinstall it over SuSE. I'll see. (wish me luck)
