Suse 9.1, nightshade mb, nvidia pci, 3d enabled but no 3d

Clean install of Suse Pro 9.1 with an Intel Nightshade server board, integrated video that can't be disabled. Nvidia PCI geforce 440 mx. Nvidia driver seems to load correctly, nvidia update installed and reinstalled from Yast, system says 3D enabled yet I get no nvidia splash screen and GL support not working.

Everything thing else on this system seems to work very well.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

the missing splash screen doesn't surprise me, i haven't seen it in ages. the yast online update supplied nvidia module doesn't work all that well, you may want to get the code from nvidia and build it yourself. you also may want to enable 'renderaccel' with sax2, i've never noticed a difference, but i don't play alot of high frame rate games.

Thanks for the reply.

Last time I tried to install an Nvidia driver manually, I didn't know how to answer half the questions.

I just thought maybe:

Section "Screen"
SubSection "Display"
Depth 16
Modes "default"
EndSubSection
SubSection "Display"
Depth 8
Modes "default"
EndSubSection
Device "Device[vesa]"
Identifier "Screen[vesa]"
EndSection

... isn't right. Device[vesa] seems wrong, but not sure what it should be.

the "generic XFree86 4.x configuration file" bit throws me i
don't think your in the right file, sax2 normally leaves "generated with sax2" at the top.

drop to runlevel 3 with 'init 3' at the root prompt. login as root and run sax2 from there.

If it matters... "hardware info" shows the bus id for the on-board cirrus card is 14.0, the geforce card is 10.0, but my config file has 16.0.

Just did that (without the =nvidia) and it worked, enabled 3d, tested, saw the nvidia spash screen, now it seems to have hung after I clicked save.

Powering off and back on...

After experimenting with a couple settings in sax2, I got it working... screensavers were what I was using to test.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!

No, that's what I hate about that board, I've been tempted to rip chips off the thing in the past (kidding) to disable the video. There's not even a jumper to kill it.

Thanks again!

Oh, and I also have the nvidia splash screen when it boots now.

This is the first time I've actually seen "Tux Racer" work.
