Suse 9.1 (crippled version) unable to ping but able to surf

I am basically able to browse the net with Konqueror after setting up my proxy. I even went into YaST and changed the proxy settings there. I am able to connect to servers using YOU but cannot add servers when I try to change source of installation. I am currently unable to ping anything from console. Please help.

Dell Inspiron 2650 with Suse 9.1

Is this box set to use dhcp? Is the dhcp daemon set to grab dns server names?

You can't ping even an IP address? Try this (google's ip):
ping 216.239.51.99

The current ethernet card is set to have automatic address setup via dhcp. I cannot ping that IP address either. However, I can surf there quite easily...weird.

Isn't it some firewall/proxy related issue? You really need proxy to surf? Can't you disable it?

..."setting up my proxy. I even went into YaST and changed the proxy settings there. I am able to connect to servers using YOU but cannot add servers when I try to change source of installation"...

Why do you want to do this? Maybe we can do in another way.

I'm at work, so the proxy is necessary unfortunately.
