Suse 9.0 FTP install problems

I'm trying to install Suse 9.0 using a boot CD from the boot.iso.

I've tried the Live eval CD, which works just fine, including network connections.

Using Manual install, I set the options, load my NIC driver module, and try to install via Network, FTP, auto-DHCP, non HTTP, etc., just like all the (very helpful) guides on the internet document.

However, every IP address I've used gives me a message 'cannot connect to FTP server'.

- I've reburnt the ISO - no image corruption issues
- the NIC module works fine in the live eval (I checked the module name; there were no configuration settings)
- I _am_ entering the IP address (I've tried 5 different ones, all verified)


Basically, setup runs fine, but I can't connect to any FTP server. I assume it's a NIC configuration issue, though the machine connects fine w/ the Live eval.

Might I need to install some other modules to get the NIC to work?

I have the same problem. Burned the CD. Tried different IP addresses. All come back with 'cannot connect to FTP server'. Any news on this?

I have exactly the same problem.

Either of you behind a Netgear (or similar router?)

I can ping the box once the install program is running, etc....just cannot connect.

I have netgear router, dsl...

instead of using linux linstall= ftp://{ip}

just put install=ftp://[ip-address]/pub/suse/i386/9.0

worked smooth for me, but then again, I made a local mirror first since I only have 56K :(

Possible Solution
 

Newbie here. I figured the ip address issue by selecting the mirror I wanted to download from , i.e. ftp.mirror.ac.uk and then in my WinXP box at the command prompt typing:

ping ftp.mirror.ac.uk

the box comes back with the ip address which i then insert in the installation.

worked for me, hope this helps.

I tried all the actual IP addresses I could find. (i.e. did the same thing, pinged the name and then put in the actual address).

From what I can tell, this is a problem between passive ftp and active ftp and the cheaper home routers that don't support it.

I too am having a problem with SuSE install...

After trying MDK and hating it, i downloaded the boot.iso and made the disc

It boots up fine, then when i go to install it says "Booting Kernel" and gets to 100 then the screen goes black and nothing else happens.

I've tried all of the install options...manual, safe, acpi off, etc

Any ideas on this?

I might have to go distro hunting yet again. Might just have to end up going to Fedora, but i wanted to try SuSE.

same problem, go figure.. but I have to agree with tbw228 in that it's a router issue because I tried just about everything pulling my hair out and then I downloaded a couple files from a mirror and put them on my internal ftp and it connected to the ftp fine.. although I really don't want to download a whole mirror so I'm going to play around with my router some more.. if anyone knows exactly what causes this could you please post, thanks alot.

oh, I'm on a laptop behind a netgear router btw... HP Pavilion zt1130

have you all confirmed with a different box connected to the internet that you can acutally log on at the time you are installing? I had the same problem, but discoved I was actually getting "too many users in this class" for 4/5 of the ftp sites I found. I know this is terribly simplistic, but....

also. are you all sure that you are dropping the first forwardslash when providing the directory on the ftp server? as I recall (I did 2 sucessfull suse ftp installs last weekend) you are first prompted for the ftp server - which you should just give the ip add as the answer, and then a second prompt asks for the directory on the server, in which case you must drop the first forwardslash (I found that peculiar)... like this

pub/linux/suse/9.0 - right

/pub/linux/suse/9.0 - wrong

get off the router and just directly connect your modem to your NIC, should do fine then,

yea I tried logging into the ftp after my laptop gave me the error and I was able to fine, from another computer of course.. last night I went ahead and just downloaded all the files off a mirror and setup my home ftp since I know it would work.. thanks for the help tho and good luck to anyone else having problems..

unfortunately not everyone can just disconnect their whole network while installing linux...

i installed my suse from the ftp through a wireless router and it worked fine... but took me forever to figure out... what is a good idea is go to the mirrors page on the suse website, write down the ftp.whatever.net name and ping it to get its IP (i found a website that finds this out for you, somewhere in a google search) but you can use the windows command from above if you like. i tried like 3 or 4 of them before one actually worked... you know you have succeeded if it asks you for the directory on the server. i could connect to all the ftps from my other computer but the suse installation is really temper mental. i ended up having to install mine from a server in southern California and i am from Boston so go figure. just don't give up, and the biggest thing is during the installation the system may appear to "hang" especially on the "evaluating packages" screen, but it is just receiving information from the net... let the install run for a long time before you give up and try rebooting your system... and if your having real trouble with crashes, run the text only mode from the resolutions menu on the first screen you see when your install CD boots up. also, as mentioned above, MAKE SURE you put the directory with no "/" at the beginning... this took me 2 hours to figure out... type it like this:

pub/Linux/SuSE/i386/9.0

each server has a different folder setup so make sure u know each of them for the server ur connecting to. LOWERCASE AND UPPERCASE ALWAYS MATTER IN LINUX!!! so make sure you have the proper case... good luck and remember when the install starts to be PATIENT.

all.... just installed Suse 9.0 through ftp last night, like the others in this thread I had problems connecting to the ftp mirrors. I tried just about all of them to no avail, I then googled and found this thread, I disconnected my router (netgear fm114p) and went directly to the cable modem and it worked fine! I will now look through my router options to see if settings could be changed or maybe put the machine in the DMZ just for the install?? any one out there have other ideas or found a fix? I had to do this at night otherwise the wife and kids would be on my back for taking down our home network ;-)

I can't do a network install either - tried many many ftp servers and couldn't connect to any of them - never mind getting to the "select the directory" bit . I am also behind a router and unfortunately I don't have an ADSL modem to try the other method, as I am connected to the router via a Realtek ethernet card (and yes I installed the module for it which seemed to load up fine). Mandy 9.1, 9.2 & 10 all freeze on boot up after installation for me so they're a no go, I thought Fedora Core was crap (IMHO) and my final option was SUSE. I'm not an IT professional so I'm not going to even attempt any of the more complex distros out there because I'll be completely lost.

Anyone got any definitive help on this subject or am I going to come back to Linux again in about a year hoping its going to be better (like I have for the last two.... )

Sorry to sound a bit ticked off but I am really - can't estimate the amount of man hours I have wasted trying to get a linux distro to install....
