SuSE 8.2 internet connection
 

I have recently installed SuSE 8.2 in place of SuSE 8.1, and am having trouble connecting with the internet and sending emails.

I have used YAST2 to set up my ISP details, and it has recognised my modem. When I try to dial the internet using Kinternet, it appears to make all the appropriate sounds, but doesn't connect. However, it doesn't display any error message or give me any other indication as to why it cannot connect. I have also set up KMail but, not surprisingly, when I try to send a message, I get the error message:

'Sending failed:
Unknown host Tiscali
The message will stay in the 'outbox' folder until you either fix the problem (eg a broken address) or remove the message from the 'outbox' folder...'

The following transport protocol was used:
smtp.tiscali.co.uk'

Can anyone help, please?

In a command shell type hostname, then check whether that is the same listed in kmail menu structure:- SETTINGS, CONFIGURE Kmail, Network, default domain.

If I understand it correctly default domain must = hostname. If hostname is different change it by going back to command shell as su, and type hostname example, replace example with the kmail default domain string.

Now try and send mail again.

If that fails. Check all your setting once again. Also check that the Network is actually set up. SUSE start applications button, SYSTEM, YAST2, log in as su give password, system, runlevel editor, runlevel properties, scroll down to see network. I suspect perhaps that the network might not be started.

Therefore you need to continue:-

highlight network by clicking on it, click Set/Reset button, click enable. click Start/Stop/Reset and then start now, wait a few seconds, click resfresh status wait until it finishes.

Sometimes you may have to do that twice.

Then the message will come up saying Network is running.

I am a newbie. So there will be an easier way/correct way of doing this, but that is what I do when I have the problem you describe.

Another way to see more clearly what may be happening is to run cinternet from the command line and look for error messages. (yes I mean cinternet not kinternet)

cinternet -i [interface] -p [provider] -A # to connect

cinternet -i [interface] -O # to disconnect

For example, I would enter "cinternet -i ppp0 -p SNET -A"

problems with your connect script if any should be listed.

Re-Reading your post tho makes it sound as though you need to re-enter your DNS addresses. YaST2 - network services - DNS and Host Name.
