Suse 8.1 won't boot

I have just replaced Mandrake 9 with Suse 8.1 on a partition. It was a clean partition b4 the install.
Everything seemed to go smoothly but when Suse tries to boot it comes up with a small box in the middle of a black screen and it says "out of frequency".
The info says the refresh parameter for the vertical is 30 -70 but it is booting at 85. Why did the install default to that refresh rate and how do I fix it?
Keep in mind, it will only boot in Linux-safe mode not gui.
I am very new so if I have to install an Nvidia driver or change a setting please be extremely specific in what to do. Even word for word from when I login with u/name and p/w.
I read posts that say do this or that and i'm totally lost.
Heres my config:

XP1800/Soltek FRV/256mb ram
LG Studioworks 700s/ Asus GF2MX400
Win XP/Suse 8.1

Thanks for any advice.

You need to boot to command line and run yast2 for the monitor.

Thanks for quick reply.
Before I log off and reboot into linux-safe I thought I may as well be 100% clear on how to run yast2 from the command line.
Excuse my ignorance but as I said in my post, I need it spelled out to me.
Do I literally type /yast2 from the line after I enter my login details?

Yeah, just type ya and hit TAB and it should autocomplete. Make sure you're root. I haven't ran SUSE in a while-got frustrated w/ 8.1

I believe SuSE does strange capitalization of YaST2, so if you don't find it trying with a lower case y, type just a capital Y and hit tab.

Also, if you would rather not mess with YaST2, you can use SaX or SaX2 (just type "SaX" or "SaX2").

Thanks for your help so far.
OK, I can get to YasT and the config menu and I go to graphic card and monitor. I tab through to 'change' and press enter and after a moment the same 'out of frequency' appears and I have to hit enter a few times after the power management counts down to 0secs.
Then a bit more stuff scrolls through and then it shuts the pc down.
How can I change what I need to change?

Any chance of a response to my last post?

You can run xf86config instead!

Hope will help ;-)

Have fun :-)
