Hi all,

I'm having some difficulties with Suse 10.3. Below are the step the produces the issue I am facing:
* login to Suse 10.3 with a normal user ID (non-root privileged)
* Turn on the printer (mine is HP psc 1315)

A dialog will appear requesting the root password. The content of this dialog is as follows:
Administrator (root) privilege is required. Please enter the root password to continue.
Command: gnome-cups-add

* After inserting the root password I get another dialog about detecting a new printer!!

Completing/canceling this dialog doesn't make any difference as my printer is already configured in the system. However, when I want to print something I am again asked for the root password.

Any idea why this is happening?I didn't have this problem with Suse 10

Please advise and many thanks for your help in advance.

Log in and out without a password is possible it is just how you configured
you,re pc See yast2 security

If the printer is configured as a local printer and user have the privalage
to print no password needed . But it seems to me that you did not configure the printer in the wright way Switching the printer on and off do not
matters at all After testing the print out put and pressing finish he write away the settings and that is valid until you change it
So it that case he can not detected a new printer

Thanks for the input.
Login into the system is not an issue. I have configured my system to request a user name and password for login which is fine. However, the printing part is the issue

My printer is configured as a local printer and is connected to my Linux box directly via USB. However, I am not able to print any documents without giving my root password, which is strange.

You mentioned that I have to have printing privileges, how do I ensure that I have needed privileges?

The first fault is If the printer is configured correct he did not tell you that he detected a new printer.
Adding a new printer is any how a root privileges
My printer is also a USB printer After a select in my case Espon D94 I also have to select the driver
Test the printer if he is printing Save the settings by pressing finished the computer saved the settings and must do it

the dialogue seems a tad confused. To back track, if you configured your printer under root then it will ask you for a root password, if under user then you own that configuration and all is well. Perhaps 'uninstall' in Yast2 then try again as a user. 10.3 has given me some problems but then again I'm a bit green.

So what you are saying is that every user in the system has to configure it
is own printer in my opinion this untrue. Because I use suse op from suse
7.3 until now 10.3 it was always the same a printer configured by ROOT in the correct way is available for every user in the system .But is also
possible that you do the configuring in such away that file come into a print job in that case every user has to start his own print job and can decide over the quality of the output

That HP all-in-one printer is supported by hplip. After installing hplip, point your web browser to https://localhost:631. You will need to authenticate as root. Then configure it in the cups web setup. Once it is configured you shouldn't get that popup.

Being an all-in-one device, the problem could be that one part is configured, such as printing but another isn't such as scanning and appears as a separate device on the USB bus.
