Suse 10 installation on system w/2 Sata disks
 

Hi.

I think i need to provide som backgfround stuff first.
I have a system which is equipped with 1 sata system disk at 150GB and 1 sata data disk which is 300GB. on my system disk i have XP running today. When installing XP i needed to install the viamraid driver for the sata disks to work/show up in the installation gui of XP. I dont know if it is correct to do so, but it works and i can see both my disks. In my MB i have set the SATA variabel to 'IDE' rather than 'RAID'

Now i am trying to install Suse 10 and have downloaded the eval version onto a dvd. during the installation i am prompted with a 'this system has at least 1 disk with a RAID configuration.....and continuing installation will casuse the loss of data on these disks'

Obviously i dont want to loose any data so my question is, if my 2 disks are not in raid why is the suse installation telling me they are, and how do i get past this obsticle without loosing data??

I ran into this message also during my last install with XP on a raid disk being detected as a software raid array when it wasnt.

If you get this error with the one that the yast install partitioner wont be able to change the partitions without loosing data, then you will need to partition it under windows like I did. I try to make 3 if posible for swap / and /home. Then you can install like normal.

Once the partitions are already there just make sure during the install that stuff is being put in the right place and you dont have to worry about SuSE touching your windows partitions and no chance of data loss. Back up to be careful tho ;) after that the smb kernel should run perfectly with SATA.

I've had to go through this method twice and worked fine for me, the problem is the install partitioner somehow sees software SATA raid and freaks out. the kernel, however works with it just fine.
