SuSE 10.1 NVIDIA driver install woes

Hmmmm, so far i've d/loaded driver for 6600gt: read how to install from nv site. I'm on dialup for linux [one way isat for xp] so online update rarely completes before dropout. this started because crt monitor scrambles gui when plugged to digital plug on graph card. I figured the driver might fix it. Tried sh NV..etc/as instructed at nv site: added gcc-kernel source-make as advised. sh says it can't continue with xserver working!Any ideas apreciated. ant_ my thanks to Nylex' init 3 stopped xserver

Kill your X server. You can do this by changing to runlevel 3 ("init 3" as root).

Thankyou Nylex, after using your advice, the install ran through beautifully.
