SuSE 10.1 kscreensaver in VMWorkstation

Hi,

I have just solved a problem with kscreensaver which has been annoying me for several months now. Here it is...

Running SuSE 10.1 or 10.2 in VMWorkstation from version 5.5.4 build-44386 to the lastest version 6.0.0 build-45731 I found that the kscreensaver would not start.

I initially noticed this problem with 10.1 running KDE 3.5.1. I then tried upgrading KDE to 3.5.7. I then upgraded SuSE to 10.2. During this time I kept the version of VMWorkstation at the most current - nothing helped.

A workaround is using xscreensaver but it obviously does not address the underlying issue.

Having noticed that the problem didn't occur with SuSE 10.0, I checked the kde config files to look for differences.

What you need to do is add the line "DPMS-dependent=false" in the screensaver section in the file ~/.kde/share/config/kdesktoprc

Like this:

[ScreenSaver]
ActionBottomLeft=0
ActionBottomRight=0
ActionTopLeft=0
ActionTopRight=0
DPMS-dependent=false
LockGrace=60000
Priority=0
Timeout=600

and then it seems to work (we for me anyway).
