SuSe 10.1 install wont boot

i just got SuSe 10.1 installed on my laptop(compaq v5000) but when i turn the computer completely off then try to turn it back on again, all i get is a little blinking line and nothing boots. The only way i can get into the OS is by inserting the install cd and clicking install, then boot from local harddrive. Any ideas how to get it to boot like it should?

Can you see the bios booting?

Can you see the bios booting? Like you know, "checking memory" and "press F2 for setup" and such.

If so I would say that you probably have a bootloader problem. Do you remember setting a bootloader up in the installation?

boot

I do see the compaq bios screen and the bios are set to boot the hd after the dvd drive. Its just right after that i get the little underscore thing that blinks and nothing happens. I remember it just saying that it installed the bootloader, im running only suse, no windows or anything else. I did a repair and it said the bootloader was fine.

My first guess as to what's wrong is the bootloader.
Do you remember where you installed the bootloader? To the MBR or on the start your boot partition?
Also, is your boot partition flagged bootable? I just installed SUSE but I can't remember if the partitioning was done for me or not.
Another thing that it could be is your graphics card. I know that sounds weird but I've had that happen to me before. What bootloader are you using. If it's grub then the splash image could be causing problems with your video card.

boot

i have no idea where the bootloader was installed, i mean it pretty much did the partitioning for me. The laptop has intel gma 950 graphics if that helps.

ok, let's see then
Can you boot up in recovery mode? Or in text mode with the CD? If so, boot up and mount /boot. Then cd to /boot/grub.
Edit the menu.lst file and remove the line that say

color white/blue black/light-gray
gfxmenu (hd0,4)/message

Those are the lines that change anything that has to do with the video card. Try that and let me know.
