SuSe 10.1 Cannot Play Audio CDs or MP3s
 

Hello,

I'm running Suse 10.1 and I can't seem to be able to play audio cds or MP3 files. The system sounds work fine, so the sound card is working, but I don't know what I need to do to get the rest working.
I remember something similar happening on my laptop with Suse 10.0, but that went away as soon as I updated using the SuseWatcher. Since 10.1 doesn't have access to that, does anyone know where I can go to get whatever patch I probably need to get Audio files to work?

What player do you use? Try another one or start it by command line to see if you get an error output. For testing purpose you may also try the well established mplayer or some small command-line players like mpg123. This may help you find the problem's root...

I've tried both Amarok and XMMS. Amarok cycles through the songs really fast without playing them. XMMS seems to do nothing. I'm still learning all the command line stuff, would I launch Amarok manually from the command line by typing this:

prompt:>Amarok /home/user/mymp3.mp3

youll need the mp3 plugins i think. i assume you can get them with yast?

Its usually a good idea to search on the forum or on google before starting a new thread. The reason I say this is that many common questions have already been aksed and replied to so this enables you to find the solution quicker.

Many commercial Linux distros do not ship with certain multimedia capabilities due to potential licensing issues. If you need those capabilities, you enable them yourself by installing plugins or packages provided by third parties. On the opensuse website, there is a list of third party repositories, setup the packman and guru repos. If you don't know how to do this, there are instructions available in a sticky thread in the Suse forum (titled "opensuse yast repositories"). You can then use YAST to install the packages you need.

Suse comes without mp3/dvd support because of legal reasons. THIS IS MAYBE THE 1000th post about the same topic. :tisk:

First of all the suse 10.1 is ALPHA VERSION. I would use it for only testing, because it just isn't stable.

Secondly you will need to add YAST repositories to add a mp3-functionality to the system or you can download the MAD-packages manually. :study:

This thing is still in aplha/beta stage, so there maybe isn't any repositories to add.
You could also try SMART (apt) , although i don't know has it got any 10.1 packages on the list.

Onjoo is right. My reply hadn't taken into account that you are using the alpha versions. Alpha and beta versions are developement releases not meant to be used in production environments. The Suse 10 packages is packman or guru, may or may not work on the 10.1 development releases.
