SuSE 10.0, ATi 9600 AiW Radeon, and GATOS... need help bad.

Ok...

I've been trying to configure SuSE 10.0 to work with my Radeon 9600 All-in-Wonder card, and I can get the card itself working (3d accel, etc) however, the TV Input (the reason I got the card) is not.

I've gone through the GATOS project, and managed to break the installation of my graphics card so now the 3d accel doesn't work, and graphical menus are lagging again.

I've followed the instructions as written, and made no progress. I even did a fresh install of SuSE again to see if that would help anything, but alas... nothing.

The problem I seem to have is that after I unpack the archive, I look for the supposed modules to compile, and I don't see any. In fact, it tells me to look at a README file that isn't even there! Its like "Acquire Underpants. ???. Profit!"

I'm confused.

Either way... I can get the ATi linux driver working perfectly. FooBilliards never looked so good.. however, I didn't get this card to play TuxRacer and FooBilliards.. I got it to watch TV on, and to use as a DVR as well.

I need a real step-by-step, since the instructions aren't written well (grammatically as well as functionality) on the GATOS site.

Also.. does anyone know why the JACK server on SuSE won't run properly?

Supposedly Gatos has been merged into xorg 6.9.0/7.0 however I had no success getting my AiW8500DV's tuner to work. :(

Well, with Xorg 6.8.0 (standard with the SuSE10.0 DVD I have) it doesn't seem to work.

I've tried installing the XF86 4.3, and drm-kernel packages with only a long lsit of failures, and botched settings afterwards.

I've done the xorg 6.7.0/XF86 4.4 package, and it didn't have any success other than making my 3D apps unstable.

I'm starting to get real frustrated with GATOS, and ATI. Right now, all I need is the TV working, and 2 games (well.. more than 2 I'm sure, but I'm only really concerned with 2) which have shown promise on Cedega and I can dump Windows for good.

Just use the official ATI drivers, instead of the gatos/open source.

Since when does ATI's driver enable tuner support in Linux?

gjsIV>
xorg 6.8.x does not include the GATOS project.

I guess this is what I was basing my info off of. Check out ati's website. tuner support isn't gatos, that is for tv-out. Video4Linux is tuner support and video capture, at least to my understanding. I would never use a combo video and capture card, you get the lesser of both worlds that way. I have a pinaccle and a true GPU, better for system power, better capture ability, etc.

Well, here's the second major attempt, now working on my 3rd...

2nd Attempt:
Went with Mandriva 2006 (FREE) since it claims to have included support for All-in-Wonder cards. However, it didn't state whether or not it had support for TV-in on the card.

After erasing my Window's partition table, MAndriva proceeded to show me why I had not installed it in the past. It wouldn't allow me to use my SATA Raptors in a RAID (which is why I spent nearly $500+ on 2 Raptors), it didn't support the TV-in function, and the 3d acceleration was very unstable with the included ATi driver.

I banged my head against the wall for hours with Mandriva, and had less functionality from my system then I had with SuSE 10.0.

Back to SuSE.

3rd Attempt (in progress):

I've reinstalled SuSE 10.0, and I'm going through the project again with some more recent insite thanks to 3 days worth of googling "ATI 9600 XT linux."

Progress? Some. I've found that CVS packages are far more reliable than the ones off of the GATOS site. I'm currently 1 library away from getting AVview installed, which from what I've read may be the solution to my problem. However, in previous attempts AVview wouldn't install due to packages being unseen (they were there, in their correct versions, just not being seen by the installer).

The ATI driver still works, and I've even managed to get Cedega to at least log-in momentarily to the online mmorpg I play (EVE-Online Red Moon Rising).

I just now got done with an online update which will hopefully correct the zvbilib problems I've been having (got the newest branch from CVS that I'm going to compile now).

All told, I'm getting very frustrated with this, as I've seen people saying they've gotten AiW cards to work even with XawTV, but I can't even get linux to recognize that there's a TV tuner available on the card.

I've removed Window's from my computer now, and I've made the plunge.. this video card problem is essentially to sticking with linux for me though.. and if I go another day with marginal results, and added frustrations, I'm going to be forced into Windows XP again (not wasting nearly $700 in hardware just to be winfree).

Again.. if anyone has success stories with the TV-input on an ATI Radeon All-in-Wonder 9600 XT 128MB let me know.

ok updates did nothing..

here's where I'm at...

Trying to install AVview, just to see if this video player will make a difference.

In configuration, it exits because it says I don't have libzvbi 0.2.3 or higher (I have 0.2.18), so I go and get teh CVS branch of libzvbi 0.2.8 which tells me I need versions of automake older than the one I have, gettext older than what I have, and lbitool, which I also have. It acts as if they aren't even there, and I've verified and updated them to be sure.

I guess I'm going to look at the V4L information and see if there's anything relevant to getting my TV tuner to work.
