Suitable distro for movies and web-surfing on a P4?
 

hi all, have got a intel pentium 4 cpu 2.80ghz memory 3804mb drive is a wd400, which os should i try . am a newbie , a use the machine for downloading, watching movies, tv, video on youtube and liveleak,and lets not forget facebook . not good at all coding and other stuff. the os should be a all in one package which do you recommended.

Start with a live CD and then install it. This should take care of issues as and when they come up.
Start with knoppix order any one's you prefer.

I think you will find Mint to be more like you are accustomed to.

This computer has a similar CPU and less memory, so you should be fine. I'd agree with Jeremy and advise Mint: it's user friendly and not fussy about hardware. The Mate version is probably the best. You can try the live disk, to make sure Mint's happy with your computer and you're happy with Mint, before you install it.

You can install alongside Windows, so that you can chose you OS each time. If you need to do that, defrag your Windows before you start and then you can shrink the Windows partition to make room for Mint. To see how you do that, have a look at

which will also explain how to set up your partitions even if you don't keep Windows.

Might want to give that a look, read the reviews, and such. There are videos on youtube demoing its free version. Never used it myself, but it seems ok.
