Unhappy Sudo password question

I'm following a posted guide here on using WINE to install Personal Ancestry File. It tells me to open a terminal window and use Sudo to install the program. So far so good. But then Sudo asks me for my password (I have full administrative privileges) and then it tells me that's not the right password and locks me out! I've played with Ubuntu for a few years but only became a serious convert after Windows 7 crashed and trashed a year's worth of work on a drive, but have never run into this before. Help!

Perhaps you're typing the 'root' password? When using sudo, you're supposed to use your own password, as a regular user.

More specifically, when I enter other passwords, I get "Sorry, try again." When I enter MY person password, I get the message "wine: /home/japrime/.wine is not owned by you."

I put this system up just a day or two ago, so who else could "own" it?

Please open a console and paste the result of the command

Code:
ls -la /home/japrime/.wine
and we'll see whose file this is.

Ups. Sorry, try "ls -la /home/japrime" (I wanted to see the owner of ".wine" not of its contents). Funny that you should have a froup "japrime". Does that hold for all of your home directory?

Not sure I understand your question. Ubuntu named the group, not me.

I erred, when I gave you the command to try. Please open a console and paste the result of the commands

Code:
ls -la /home/japrime
ls -la /home
Right, Ubuntu does that naming. I'm just trying to see what it did on your machine.

Thanks for the fast reply. But I can't see anything amiss, sorry. Seemingly the error message is wrong. Those are hardest to set right, an Ubuntu-expert is needed here ... which I'm not. Sorry and good luck.

Thanks! I though only Windows acted as arbitrarily as this! I guess I am just cursed.

Well, this is Ubuntu, they have their own security concept. Why don't you try a rpm based distribution, like e.g. openSuSE or Fedora, I haven't seen anything like this there. And if it is any consolation to you, I have my own related hassle with Ubuntu: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...ations-920444/ .

Perhaps I can offer an alternative - that may or may not work - open a console log in as root (ie 'su') and then when you get the root prompt then run 'wine filename.exe'. I have run some apps in wine but never does it ask for a password. Does this happen with all applications or only this one. Else perhaps the windows .exe file is not owned by you. Try 'ls -lh filename.exe'. If the file is not owned by you then log in as root on the console and change the file access rules. If you are in GUI then simply right click the filename and go to properties and check for yourself.
Try the steps and tell us what happens.
Hope this helps.

To me this isn't a problem cause by Ubuntu being silly or anything like that.
I think the guide to installing Personal Ancestry file is wrong.
Please feel free to correct me but I always understood that when installing programs under Wine you did it as your account because they go into your home directory with you as the owner and having the permission to them.
To install a program under Wine I would just run
Code:
japrime@japrime-LENOVO-3000:~$wine <program name>
