Thumbs up Suddenly really slow internet connection

my internet browsing suddenly slowed down, and I haven't changed any settings (at least that I know). I've looked at the settings in Fx and it's the same, unchanged. In the network card settings in yast2 I get this:

Quote:
3Com 3C905C-TX Fast Etherlink for PC Management NIC
Device Name: eth-id-00:01:02:0c:a7:b9
IP address assigned using DHCP
Started automatically at boot
The asdl settings is empty in yast2.....

So I just don't know what happened. It's really slow, seems like the connection is shutting down every few seconds, and it has to re-initialize all the time. I have a adsl modem 2mb and the settings in fx is set to direct connection. Konqueror is slow too. Any tips to get it working at the ususal speed is appreciated.

Try pinging both an external site (like google.com) and your local host (127.0.0.1). Compare the difference between the two ping times. If you local host is responding normally, but your external ping is very slow then it is probably not a problem with your settings; it is mostly likely a problem with your service provider or your modem.

Here's what my external ping looks like:
Code:
jellison@flux22:~$ ping www.google.com
PING www.l.google.com (64.233.187.104) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from 64.233.187.104: icmp_seq=1 ttl=247 time=6.86 ms
64 bytes from 64.233.187.104: icmp_seq=2 ttl=247 time=6.73 ms
64 bytes from 64.233.187.104: icmp_seq=3 ttl=247 time=8.16 ms
64 bytes from 64.233.187.104: icmp_seq=4 ttl=247 time=7.26 ms

--- www.l.google.com ping statistics ---
4 packets transmitted, 4 received, 0% packet loss, time 3005ms
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 6.733/7.254/8.163/0.565 ms

127.0.0.1 is the address of the local loopback interface. Any latency is the time it takes for your computer to respond as it's basically pinging itself. You shouldn't spend too much time pinging yourself as you're liable to go blind.

The first set of results looks okay except where it jumps from 30ms to 145ms. Try it again but while it's running do not go to any sites, chat on MSN or do anything that would otherwise put load on your connection. I'd guess it won't happen again it was just a page load or something but never hurts to double-check.

it still jumps, but the connection is not so slow today as it was yesterday. it's almost at normal speed today I think...

cs-cam is right, your local ping will be very small. But if there was a problem with your network card, then there could be some delay. Since there isn't and you are getting that weird jump in response time, I would say that either your modem is going bad or your ISP is screwing you over. Either way, there isn't much you can do about it until it gets consistently worse.

My modem went bad once and it had similar symptoms.

Good Luck,
~Justin

Which ISP do you have? I have Comcast and it seems like they cut my speed down quite a bit.

I'm actually in the process of graphing how the Comcast pings change over time. I believe that Comcast does not fullfill their promise as to upload/download speeds. When the demand goes up just slightly, Comcast cuts everybody else down to save money. So, you're probably right, they are cutting down your speed.

Mcribs and jeelliso, you know in my country here in old europe there was a lawsuit just a few months a ago where some users complained that they didn't get the internet speed they were paying for. I think they ran some tests to prove it. And they won the case and got some monies too. So just go for it!

And this is the same isp I have, so maybe I should give them a call....
