Exclamation Suddenly can't log in to GUI after installing Gnome!

Help!

In OpenSUSE 11.3, I thought I'd try out the GNOME desktop, just to see what it's like. Via YaST, I installed "gnome-desktop". I logged out. In the "Session" menu there was no "GNOME" option. But When I tried to log back in to KDE, all that happened was that the screen flashed to text for a second and then returned me to the login screen. This happens every time. I am able to log in to the "failsafe" option, i.e., just a terminal. I can also log in as root.

Can anyone tell me what I need to change to fix this?

I would (obviously) prefer not to reinstall the whole thing, BUT if that's necessary, at least /home is on a separate partition...

I found this similar question: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...y-cant-368212/. I'll try removing the ~/.xinitrc. But any other ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks!

UPDATE:

Aha, yes, the ~/.xinitrc was apparently the problem. I removed it (as root), logged out, and was able to log back in as me again just fine!

Phew!

So: false alarm! If mods feel this is redundant, in light of the earlier thread I linked to, I won't mind at all if this one is deleted.

Thanks for the help you gave in that previous thread, everybody!
