su root command returns 'cannot set groups...'
Hello all - first post
Here's what I'm experiencing:
[nathan@golgotha nathan]$ su root
Password:
su: cannot set groups: Operation not permitted
[nathan@golgotha nathan]$
I'm sending the command through a terminal window in KDE
Running:
Red Hat 8 - 2.4.18-27.8.0
KDE
don't know what else would be helpful here
This is actually a change from what I was getting(?) Until this evening whenever I tried su and entered my password, I would get password incorrect (I was absolutely, positively entering the correct password, no caps lock, nothing) I had been dealing with this by logging in as root, which is not only a pain, but HIGHLY not recommended, as I've seen reiterated through out linuxquestions.org. I've read man and info on su, while informative, they haven't really given me any ideas of what to fix. I've searched through the forums here and seen a lot of problems I'm glad I don't have, but no answers. Also, when configuring the various things to be configured in KDE that require root password, some work, some don't (giving me incorrect password error) I'm betting there's some cryptic command to run or obscure config file that I need to change to fix this. Any clues as to what to do would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Nathan
