su -

I've always managed to su - before, worked a treat. Today I had a mishap and had to boot with a live cd to remove the password for root so I could log back in When I rebooted normally I logged in as root and reset the password, worked all fine. Now when I'm not running X i can log into root no worries but in fluxbox using aterm, s- or su root gives me access denied. I know the pssword is right because it works outside of X.

Any ideas? Ta

My personal suggestion, setup sudo instead of su'ing all the time. When you su, your allowing your root password to be possibly picked up by a sniffer, etc. Sudo allows your user to perform any commands you setup and it never requires you to use root's actual password but your users instead.
