stuck at username prompt in Suse 12.2

Greetings
I'm new to linux but not computing. Taking intro to linux class and got the chance to build a linux rig out of and old dell dimension 2400. Installing opensuse 12.2 Mantis kernal 3.1.6-2.10 default ttyl. while installing got a text screen asking for username then password which i provided. shortly after that the install crashed and had to close, with a message with the :( sorry ran into a problem bla bla bla. the system didn't have much memory so i installed some more and rebooted. now when i get to the text screen asking for username, i enter and it says invalid username...soo I installed ubunto but I really wanted open suse. So i put in my suse disk and rebooted. it started installing and I got back to the username screen again and guess what? invalid username!
I've tried everything I can think of. any ideas?

Where did you get the Opensuse disk?

If you downloaded the Opensuse .iso and burned it to disk, run md5sum on the iso, and compare it to the published md5sum at the Opensuse website. If they don't match, the download is corrupt. Do it again.

I got the .iso from the opensuse.org site. I don't know how to run the md5sum on the iso. I downloaded the file on a windows 7 machine and burned the .iso to an installation disk, put that in my linux box and let it run. after it crashed during the installation I did redownload and burn using a slower burn speed. but cant get past the username screen.
thanks for the answer

You're not getting past the username screen because it's probably either continuing the existing partial install, or the installation is corrupt. You need to reformat the partitions and start from scratch.
