Stuck at "running local scripts"


Super noob here. Ubuntu 7.10 was working fine for a couple weeks and was loving it, booting off external HD, tried to start up last nite and now just hangs @ "running local boot scripts (/etc/rc.local) sits there forever, have no clue what to do?? Last thing i did was switch session to Gnome..someone pls help me. Thanks

try rebooting but when you get to grub choose the failsafe settings, this should drop you to a commandline only enviroment.

try using startx to see if you can get a working desktop that way, once you have that we can look at the possable causes.
