Struggling Ubuntu CE 8.04 New and can't understand

I am struggling bad with this new Ubuntu CE 8.04. I don't understand Linux at all I can't grasp the basics. Everything out there on the internet that I find (to me) leave a big gap. I have been trying to install things on the system and I have not been having any problems with the add/remove program but I have been having problems with other manual installations. One of the commands that I have been told to use in one of the installations is "make", "make install" and I don't know what to do with this. I have tried to use the sudo command and then nothing happens. One of the the things that I was trying to install is KDENLive and they said that I need to have a lot of other software install and I can download it and extract it but then there is no installation file. I found a config file and ran that but then I don't see anything else.

Installation has been the biggest problem and the biggest question for the last year or so since I have been messing around with linux. I was trying to use Linspire 5.0 until someone in these formus recommended Ubuntu and I am loving Ubuntu. I just need to figure out what I am doing in the OS.

I need to get some help with trying to find somewhere were I can learn the commands and basics of Ubuntu.

PS I am also still having problem with my Samba. http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...-samba-678176/

Thank you for your time.

While I know next to nothing about the finer-points of Ubuntu, I have to think that both of those programs are common enough that they (and their dependencies) should be in a repository someplace. Maybe you could try asking in the Ubuntu forum for the sources?

As for building from source, you should read some of the FAQs written on the topic. There are plenty of them and many of them break things down to the most basic parts.

Just do a Google.
