stretching the screen(not the resolution
 

I was wondering how I can stretch the screen to fit my monitor without changeing my resolution from 1024*768? I am running SUSE 9.2 and used the program that YaST had for stretching the screen but it didnt work. I tryed useing my monitors controls to strech the screen but it can't stretch it far enough, and as I am running a dual boot I don't really want to do that any ways.

you do that on the monitor buttons

the monitor controls don't allow enough adjustment.
i can't remember off the top of my head where it is,but there is a way to lower the dot pitch to bring it down to windows level.

sounds like you have a high res monitor, so you may have to go higher on Suse... my laptop I have to go as high as 1400... otherwise looks like the crap XP laptops that run in 800x600 LOL

or it could simply be that sax mis-configured the h and v refresh rates.(i love suse,but up untill 9.3 i've always had to manually edit the x config file for one reason or another.)
if you want to increase the resolution,you can go into control center under fonts(and icons>advanced) and increase the default size used to offset it.

and editing the h and v syncs will stretch the screen?? I'll have to try again. when you say the x config file I assume that you are talking about the XF86Config file right??

my monitor maxes out at 1024x768(at least in windows) is it safe to put it higher with xwin??

cheers Paul, my mistake... very tired last night and I have lots of posts going at once.

changing the sync values will not help, this is more to do with the refresh of the screen.

you can change the values in the x config files, but my experience has been that only the very newest distros can 'stretch' the screen a la windows and keep the res the same.

Ubuntu and Mandrake 2005 can do this point and click... fedora cannot and I do not have any suse boxes with a GUI.

if windows maxes at 1024x768 then that is probably the max supported resolution.
/etc/X11/xorg.conf what you want to look for is to see if the frequencies sax uses match your monitors specs.you'll know it's the right file when you see all the warning to not edit it ;) if they do need changed you need to do so as root.
for the dot pitch,if i remember correctly windows uses some thing like 75 and linux 79.i still need to dig around to see if i can find the config file that sets that.

you're never supost to edit all the best files:P

I hear you rkettle, sorry I couldn't resist poking fun, thank you for your help tho definetly useful.

I ended up digging around for the drivers for my monitor and it turns out if I set the syncs right it can go up to 1280*1024 which fits BEAUtifuly and is not as impossible to read as I feared(cept in windows(stupid windows))

any ways if you could still send me anything you dig up on the dot pitch, id like to know more about that. and id also like to knwo what I can do about stretching full screen programs that run in lower res.
