ondoho, could you be more specific as to the reason for your post. I'm not sure I follow exactly what you're asking

1) My initial problem was a giant bloated distro (was able to cut that down to about 1/5 but that brings me to secondary issues)
2) Subsequent attempts to install distros based on Jessie have failed to install grub properly (I've tried numerous configurations on various different drives and nothing works. I was able to hack together my own functional grub, but upon booting, would hang at one point and then eventually freeze at what I assume is some hardware module/config)
3) Ubuntu16 installed just fine, and I've never had issues installing previous versions of Debian, or any other distro in the 15 years that I've been exposed to linux (so I'm certain it's not my error)

Currently, I am trying to find a mini/netinst distro based on Debian that I can build up my own DE. All I am able to do at the moment is run persistent live boot, which leads to other issues in regards to directory layout and root permissions when attempting to issue certain necessary commands.

At this point, I suppose my only option is to install either a mini version of Ubuntu and then modifying it or moving away from Debian altogether

My need for linux at this moment is for a couple Raspberry-Pi and Arduino projects and I need full network transparency, and since I'm primarily familiar with Debian, I figured Kali would be the most reasonable stock distro; but, I will not be penetration testing/hacking any external systems, so I hardly need any of the default tools. Honestly, it doesn't need to be Kali at all, I just need complete network transparency and would prefer Debian base since I am familiar... it seemed logical.

For more information on exactly what I have done to get this far and the particular... quarks, I've been having to deal with, please refer to https://forums.kali.org/showthread.p...t-boot&p=63301

Again, these issues have shown themselves with Jessie and all Jessie based distros I have tried, so it is not Kali specific

nobody's forcing you to use $GIANT_BLOATED_DISTRO - just install debian cli, and apt-get install openbox on top of that - done.

what exactly is this supposed to mean? either you installed jessie, or something else.

well here is something that looks like it's a real problem and is maybe even worth its own thread.

:sigh: ubuntu is not debian

see above.

because of the grub problem? as i said, seperate thread for that, a real help request, not a rant about bloated DEs.

no. kali simply isn't a stock distro.

wow! what a monologue. tl;dr
again my advice: pinpoint the (or one) problem, and try to actually solve it, i.e. create a clear help thread.

Was not aware a standalone CLI was available, I will try that; thank you

Well, I have. I'll do the same here though seeing as LQ seems far more active

Well obviously. as a data point it is relevant that other distros installed without issue

Referring to Kali as it is offered on their site as opposed to the respin I am currently running

Well, you said the issue was not clear, but yes, I understand; thank you

Thumbs up

CL

Two links: Aptitude is sweet for CLI* and the first one links to some CDs with non-free firmware to boot a netinst &c.

May as well add this one: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...1/#post5603587
