Streaming video in linux.

Hi!

Okai, so I have Elive17 installed on my whole drive. I used to have Windows xp before Elive17, and I have noticed that streaming videos of the net is horrible in Elive compared to windows. I had no problems streaming videos in Windows. I remember I had the same problem when I had Ubuntu installed. Why is this? What can I do about it? Elive17 comes with firefox iceweasel - so I tried another browser, Opera. It helped a bit, but its still horrible.

What do you mean horrible? Low graphics quality??

Horrible as in slow, as in buffering forever. Which is wierd, as we have the best internet conection and streaming videos in windows used to go really fast.

How about checking your internet speed using network monitor ?

Are you geting the same speed as in windows ?(check it ehile you're streaming)

I can't explain it exactly as i'm not familiar with your distro.

Is it gnome or kde ?

Look for something like 'network monitor' in your system settings (you may not have one)

Or just simply download a file using firefox and it'll tell the speed in KB/S

Okai, I'm downloading a ISO now, and the download rate is 200-300 kb/s

If you have a ~2 or 3 Mbps connection, then the browser is working alright.

You've problem with flash videos. right? (youtube, google videos, etc.)

Try updating flashplayer to the latest: http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/

Also let us know what's your graphic card ? Is the correct driver loaded ?

It's a Acer Aspire One Hdd. No, it doesnt have a graphics card. Yes, I have the latest version of flash player. Streaming videos from youtube and such is the problem. I just don't understand. Downloading files seems to go fast, but streaming video is absolutely horrible.

Just to check...

You might download and try a copy of PCLinuxOS to use it to check your connection to the streaming content you are having a problem with. It is a live-cd with media playing applications already configured.

Now thats wierd. I just updated the system (again) and it works great now. Rofl! There is a IQ test Ad on this page saying: "How smart are you?" - Well, I don't feel so smart right now! :P

One possibility is you are using a generic video driver, not the optimal driver for your system. Look in /etc/X11/xorg.conf and see which video driver is listed. If it is vesa (or anything generic), that would explain the poor performance.
